VICON MOTION CAPTURE CAMERAS STAR IN "FLY FISHING THE WORLD" ON OUTDOOR CHANNEL

September 3, 2008 (Denver, CO) The Outdoor Channel’s series “Fly Fishing The World” is featuring the Fly Casting Institute’s (FCI) use of VICON motion capture cameras during its latest fly casting clinic.

The episode airs Friday, September 5, at 7:00 am and 8:30 pm, and Sunday, September 7, at 8:00 am on the Outdoor Channel.

A departure from its normal focus on celebrity fly casters, this episode of “Fly Fishing The World” follows FCI clinic participants as they practice a casting technique designed by world renowned Jason Borger.

The episode begins with clinic participants casting in a gymnasium at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. Each participant is fitted with specially designed motion capture (mocap) markers that enable VICON’s advanced optical capture cameras to track and analyze their casting biomechanics. Before and after training casting images can be played side by side, or the clinic participant’s mo-cap image can be viewed next to Jason Borger’s acclaimed technique. The participants continue their training and techniques in the scenic Paradise Valley along the Yellowstone River.

Prior to the mocap sessions, the FCI Clinic participants were given focused, upper-extremity physical exams. This, combined with a detailed casting questionnaire, served to further integrate the VICON motion data with each caster’s physical history. The data collected will be further used in understanding casting problems from the perspective of injury prevention and rehabilitation, as well as biomechanics.
The Fly Casting Institute is dedicated to advancing and integrating the science, medicine, and art of fly casting. FCI partners with the Montana State University Biomechanics Lab, which is home to a VICON motion-capture system, which allows the FCI to view the body/rod/line interactions of fly casting at 200-frames-per-second in full 3-D space.
